Safe Transport — Saigon Pocket Guide
Safe Transport Guide
Saigon Strolls with Peace of Mind
Saigon’s sea of millions of buzzing motorbikes might look terrifying at first glance. However, by using smart mobility applications, you can navigate easily and securely.
Ridesharing Apps (Highly Recommended)
Fares are calculated upfront and routes are GPS-tracked, eliminating language barriers and any chance of overcharging.
Grab
The biggest app in Southeast Asia. Call motorbikes (GrabBike) or cars (GrabCar) in seconds. We strongly advise linking your credit card in the app before arriving.
Xanh SM
Vietnam’s first all-electric (EV) taxi company. Sporting a signature baby blue color, these vehicles are spotless, odorless, quiet, and driven by extremely polite, well-trained drivers.
Reputable Traditional Taxis
If hailing a cab on the street, ONLY choose these two premium operators, and ensure the driver turns on the taximeter.
Vinasun Taxi
White cabs with red and green stripe details. Saigon’s most reliable traditional brand with drivers wearing tidy professional uniforms.
Mai Linh Taxi
All-green cabs. A trusted nationwide company with strict meter control, meaning highly reliable pricing.
How to Cross a Saigon Street
Crossing through an endless flow of motorbikes is an unforgettable adrenaline rush. Follow this golden rule to do it safely.
Walk slowly with a steady pace
Do NOT run, stop, or turn back suddenly. Bike riders are actively anticipating your trajectory and will smoothly navigate around your back.
Make eye contact & signal
Look at oncoming drivers to show you see them, and hold your hand slightly down to assert your intent to cross. They will slow down.
Never walk and use your phone on the street. It makes you a prime target for opportunistic bag-snatchers. Walk inside a shopfront before looking at your map.
Wear cross-body bags slung away from the road, and hold your bag firmly against your chest when walking or riding.
Grab App Advice
Install Grab and link your payment card while you still have access to your home SMS network. This ensures you can seamlessly hail a ride immediately upon landing at the airport.
Spotting Fake Taxis
Scam taxis painted in similar green or white colors with slightly altered logos lurk around major transit hubs. Always verify the operator phone number printed on the car doors and look for official driver ID cards.
Avoid Panicking in the Street
Stopping dead in your tracks or jumping backward is the single biggest cause of street crossing incidents because it breaks the predictable flow for bike riders. Stay calm and walk steadily.
Grab Bike (Motorbike)
The fastest and cheapest way to navigate through busy streets. Driver provides a helmet.
